Yahtzee is a type of game using dice. The company that originally distributed this game was Milton Bradley. It now is made under the direction of Hasbro. In 1956, a game entrepreneur, Edwin S. Lowe, marketed the Yahtzee game. His inspiration for the game came from previous games including Yacht, Poker Dice, Yatzy, and Generala.
Strategy or Luck?
Yahtzee is a game of both strategy and luck. The strategy is important because you only can fill a score box once. Therefore, it is important to make a wise decision as you roll and try to fill each of the 13 different combination boxes.
Each player has the opportunity to roll the dice up to three times. For example, if you make your combination on the first role then you do not need to roll the dice either the second or third time. On the 1st and 2nd rolls, you decide which dice you want to keep and which dice you want to roll. On the 3rd roll, you keep them all.
At the end of your turn, you will be required to put your score into one of the 13 boxes on the scoresheet. The score that you obtain will depend on the combination that you have rolled and the box that you choose. As mentioned previously, you only get one chance for each box.
You always want to choose the box that provides you with the highest score. There may be occasions where you place a zero into a ‘bad box’, like chance, instead of a low score in a ‘good box’, like a large straight.
When you purchase the game of Yahtzee, you typically receive five dice, a dice rolling cup, a set of rules, and some scoresheets. The scoresheet is divided into two sections, the upper and lower section. Yahtzee Is different from other card games that allow you to keep score on a blank piece of paper. With Yahtzee, it is better to use the scoresheets that come with the game or download printable Yahtzee score cards from the online website.
The upper section has six boxes, 1-6, and a bonus box. You will need to achieve a total score of 63 or greater in boxes 1-6 to receive a bonus of 35 points.
